Travel Tips

Having to fit all of the belongings that you would like to have, wear, and use for the next two years fit into two checked suitcases and one carry on bag, can seem quite overwhelming. When we heard the news I thought,  "Where in the world do I start?" I never realized how materialistic I was until this point. I always knew I loved clothes and accessories and working in a clothing store with a 40% discount only intensified my love. But, in all seriousness, I was not sure where to start packing and how to keep things organized once I reached my destination. Over the course of our journey, I will show you different hacks that are easy to pack, take up minimal space in the suitcase, and are very practical for your life on the road.

Tie Holder
If your spouse is an IM for Chick-fil-A, I am sure that you own an overwhelming amount of ties. CFA comes out with new ties throughout the year for different season and occasions. It is the equivalent of  a new release of the spring collection of hand bags, but for our husbands. They love their ties and the individuality that they feel when they can wear their favorite colors and patterns. Before we left home, I found this tie holder at Steinmart for only $8.99. It can hold up to 30 ties and takes up virtually no space in your suitcase. It will also allow their ties to hang and avoid getting wrinkled along your journey.

Bobby Pins
Ladies, whether you want to give your self a bump like Snooky or a simple and sleek updo like Kate Hudson, bobby pins are a girl's best friend when it comes to hairstyles. But, keeping up with those things can be nearly impossible. Go to the travel section of your nearest Walgreens, Target, or Wal-Mart and purchase a travel size container of Q-tips. For $1, you can get Q-tips and the perfect size container to hold all your bobby pins in one place. Just simply remove the Q-tips from the container and insert your bobby pins. The case snaps shut to keep the pins secure.

Accessories

One of the hardest categories for me to reduce from my wardrobe was accessories. I still brought quite a few accessories with me. Accessories can totally change an outfit. So, since I had to reduce my wardrobe I didn't want to completely skimp on my accessories. I can wear the same dress but with different accessories and shoes and it may not be as obvious that it is the same thing that I wore before. With that said, I kept all of my accessories that go with everything. Anything gold, silver, turquoise, or coral got to stay. I pretty much resold everything else. There are two ways to help your jewelry travel easy.

1. Glad Press n' Seal
My friend Irissa showed me this and it literally blew my mind! This will help your jewelry travel to your destination without getting tangled or lost.

First, roll out a rectangular piece of PNS (Press n' Seal). Next, lay your jewelry down on the sticky side of the PNS. Place multiple pieces around the PNS.

Once you have placed your jewelry onto the PNS, roll out another piece the same size as the first piece of PNS. Lay the second piece over the first piece and press down around all of the pieces of jewelry. The jewelry will then stay in place until you reach your destination, and be tangle free!

2. Hanging Jewelry Holder
I bought my hanging jewelry holder at Steinmart for $19.99 and I am so thankful that I did. I am used to having one of those beautiful free standing very tall jewelry boxes. Since that is larger than my suitcase and definitely not an option for travel, I had to come up with plan B. This is a great hanging organizer. It takes up very little space in the suitcase and has multiple zipper compartments for travel.

Important Papers

You and your spouse will both have a plethora of papers to keep up with on your journey. It will be vital that you have a solid organization system.

For the IM

We purchased a small according style folder for Justin to keep all of his receipts from paid outs, hotels, plane tickets, baggage fees, office supplies, and any other type of paperwork that he will need to submit to the corporate office. The folder contains thirteen pockets (1 for each month and 1 extra). We place the typed month dividers into the folder so he can easily keep his paperwork organized. If there is ever an error in the paperwork he has all of his receipts neatly filed to quickly review from the year.

For the Spouse

I also have an accordion style folder that I brought along to carry along important documents that we may need while traveling. This can be used as your "filing cabinet" while on the road. Some things you may want to consider including in your accordion folder:

1. Passports

2. Check book

3. Animal Shot Records (If you are traveling with pets.)

4. Stamps and a couple of envelopes

5. Medicine or Contact/ glasses Prescriptions

6. Social Security Cards

7. Frequent Flyer or any other reward member cards.

 Laundry

Doing laundry on the road at a hotel will probably give you flashbacks of your college days. Rolls of quarters, waiting for an available washer/ dryer, carrying all of your clothes and washing supplies down the hallway. Here are some simple suggestions to make it a little easier on yourself.

1. No need for a laundry basket.
In the hotel room there is usually an empty cabinet under the sink. We use it to put all of our dirty clothes in to keep them off of the floor and our room looking organized. When it is time to take your clothes down the hall to the laundry room, throw them into an empty suitcase. Your suitcase is also a great place to throw in your quarters, detergent, stain remover, and fabric softener.

2. No need for liquids.
If you are going to be hitting the road every 4-8 weeks there is no need to carry around heavy liquid laundry detergent. They weigh too much and risk spilling in your suitcase. Use Tide Pods for your laundry detergent. They are very lightweight and come in a re-sealable bag to keep them from accidently spilling or bursting in your bag.

Downy dryer sheets (or your favorite brand). I am so used to using my Downy ball and liquid, but in reality, it all works the same way, and this is just easier and lighter to transport.

Oxi-Clean Gel Stick. This is a stain remover in a gel form.

3. Quarter Holder
I started using one of those free accessory bags that you get with an accessory purchase at Buckle(Other stores also have them). Once I open the paper on the roll of quarters they are normally so hard to keep together even when I try to tuck the ends back. So just simply dump your roll of quarters into the accessory bag and pull the strings tight. Viola!
